Steam Gear Lab, a fine purveyor of steampunk haberdashery, mad science accoutrements, science guns and wonders of all kinds, officially presents the GameX Steampunk Art Competition.
Professor Gauthier and Dr. Grymm, two mad geniuses with over 25 years of model making, painting and fabrication experience between them, welcome you to the world of Steampunk!
Winner Categories
The GameX Steampunk Art Competition will award one Grand Prize Winner, one 2D Winner and one Digital 3D Winner, and one Physical Contruction/Sculpture Winner.
Art Competition Prizes
The Grand Prize package features the Alienware 21.5 inch OptXHD monitor, accompanied by a Cintiq 12 WX Interactive Pen Display from Wacom.
Three finalist winners will each win a Wacom Intuos 4 (6 x 8”) pressure-sensitive tablet, while all four “GameX Steampunk Art Competition” prize packages include a selection of software, including Digicel Flipbook Pro 6, Pixologic Zbrush 3.1 and 3D Coat, plus prizes from Faber-Castell.
All entrants will automatically be granted a pair of GameX 3-day passes as a courtesy award for entering the contest. Check out the prizes here!
Steampunk Theme
The Theme for the contest is “Steampunk.” Create what strikes your creative imagination in a steampunk style. Any tasteful subject matter in any style is acceptable.
3D Digital artists and 2D artists, Please sculpt A Character and, minimally, an Item. 2D artists, please also include an Environment. Artists creating with real world materials, the choice is up to you how complex you wish to go.
All artwork can be submitted as totally original, as previously existing artwork or any combinations thereof.

Art Submission Categories
You may enter one of two categories: 2D or 3D.

Classic Hand-Drawn on paper or digital. Medium choice is up to you: ink, pencil, paint, pastel and all traditional mediums. Also digital mediums such as Photoshop, Painter, etc.
Hybrid painting incorporating 3d elements will be judged as drawings. You can incorporate collage as you see fit.

Sculptures and Computer models: traditional sculptures of clay, paper mache', metal, wire, found art, and all traditional mediums. Also sculptures created with any or all digital tool such as ZBrush, MudBox, ClayTools and 3D Coat are also accepted.
Artists creating physical sculptures or digital sculptures are both encouraged to submit!

All artwork will be judged on execution first, aesthetics, then conceptualization.

Steampunk Art Guidelines
Contest Objective:
To create a character and item (for 3D digital artists); item and/or character (for physical modeler); character and items and environment (for 2D artists). Any of which could be seen in a video game, comic book or movie, using the Steampunk genre.
2-D Hand-Drawn: Ink, Pencil (pastels, charcoals), Paint ( water color, oil, acrylic) Photoshop , Painter, digital images ,
3-D: Handmade Sculptures, Figures, Maquette, Props and Computer Models.

2-D Hand-Drawn Contest Deliverables:
Digital files, digital scan of image or digital artwork. No physical artwork, please. Digital images including renders, screenshots and scans must be in 1024 x 768 pixels minimum.
Images rendered in pencil, ink, paint, Photoshop, Painter, comic book art, etc. are welcome.
Main character concept sketch head shot: 1 required.
Main character full body concept sketch: 1 required.
Items concept sketches: IE: weapon, prop, sidekick, friends, pets, parasites, etc. 3 required.
Environment concept sketch: Detailed space in which the character, works, lives, occupies. 1 optional but encouraged.

3-D Contest Deliverables::
Digital files, 1024 x 768 pixels minimum, digital scan of artwork, digital artwork screenshot, or digital photo. No physical artwork, please.
Handmade or digitally sculpted and/or modeled sculptures, figures, maquettes, and props.
Digital images of props and sculptures must be in 1024 x 768 pixels minimum.
3 views minimum required., including:
Main character concept (as concept sculpt) head shot: 1 required.
Main character full body concept: 1 required.
This is an art competiton not a technical game art contest. You will not be judged on how few polys you can use, how clean your UV's are, or any other technical considerations. Imagination and execution are the only criteria.
Winning images will be printed for display at the Expo. Prints of digital images will be no larger the 11x17, properly mounted on artist board and protected.

Steampunk Art Contest Rules
This contest is for individuals only. No group submissions. Entrants must be based in USA or Canada. All concepts must be original ideas, but may be based on classic public-domain characters. Please, no use of existing company’s IP. Originality is encouraged. Please keep all art tasteful.
Official Rules: Only one entry per person. You must be 18 years of age or older to enter and win. Open to legal residents of the 50 United States, District of Columbia, and Canada. Entrants must supply name, job title, e-mail address and phone number to enter. Drawing is governed by U.S. law and is subject to all federal, state, and local laws.
Void where prohibited. GameX reserves the right at its sole discretion to disqualify any entries submitted fraudulently or otherwise not in accordance with these Official Rules.
Permission
By entering this contest, entrants are automatically proving permission to GameX and its sponsors to re-produce entrant’s name and artwork in any promotional material or announcement specific to this contest. Artwork will not be re-used for any other purpose without express written permission of entrant.
